COSAM Peer Advisor Applications Available!!!

Applications for the 2012-2013 COSAM Peer Advisors are out! Peer Advisors is an elite group of 12 COSAM juniors and seniors who work closely with students and staff to bridge the advising gap, assist students in their understanding of their curriculum and the advising process, and who work directly with the freshman class through the Pre-Health Orientation course.

Rising juniors and seniors who have an interest in applying for Peer Advisors should stop by SCC 239 (COSAM Student Services Offce) to pick up an application. Applications are due by Monday, February 12 by 4:45 PM.

Applying to PT School...a Student's Perspective

The PT school application process is a little different than all the other professional schools application process. Since we are newer doctorate program, we do not have our own test yet like dental (DAT), optometry (OAT), and medicine (MCAT) have. You do have to take the GRE though. I suggest taking it by the end of your junior year (or the summer after).

PTCAS (Physical Therapy Centralized Application Service) opens in July. This is where you put all your information about your grades, involvement, honors, recommendation letters, PT observation hours, as well as your personal statement. You then tell it which schools you would like it to send your application to. Many of the schools will have supplemental applications, so make sure to check the schools’ websites to see if you need to give them extra information, more essays, or more fees. This is really important and can really mess your application process up if you aren’t careful. The due dates for your application are different for different schools so take that into consideration when you are applying to PTCAS, because PTCAS can take up to 5 weeks to verify all of your information.

Another major hiccup that can occur is if you don’t have all the pre-requisites that the schools you want to apply to require. Some schools require extra classes that are not in our major (Biomedical Sciences, Pre-PT), such as (but not limited to) Medical Terminology and Physiology of Exercise. I would strongly suggest checking the websites of the schools you want to apply to during at least your junior year, if not before, so you can go ahead and be sure to work these extra classes into your schedule.

Another important aspect to your application is your recommendation letters. Be thinking about who you want to write yours throughout your classes and involvement, so when the times comes that you need them, you have someone to write them for you. These need to be from a professor/advisor, PT that you have shadowed, and the third can usually be from someone else (either another advisor, PT, professor, or employer). The person you ask to write your letter needs to be someone who knows you and can write more than just that you are a sweet person or a kind soul. The admissions boards at the professional schools read a ton of recommendation letters, so yours need to stand out.

One more very important part of your application is your PT observation/shadowing hours. These need to be from a variety of fields (some schools specify the number of hours and the specializations they need to come from so make sure you look for that too on the school’s website). Some specializations that are generally looked for are inpatient, outpatient, geriatrics, orthopedics, and nursing home settings. Not all schools require every specialization, but you need to not only shadow in one area the whole time. Also, between 50-100 hours is usually expected. Once again, all the specifics for both of these will be different for each professional school, so make sure to check into that!

The application process can be stressful at times, but it also is exciting to think about your future. Don’t let it overwhelm you. Start early and get it done sooner rather than later. This looks good for the schools, as well as getting it out of your hands so you can just sit back and be patient. Also, if you are able to, don’t limit yourselves to your comfort zone schools, but apply to great schools in places you would like to live for a few years. This is a great time of life to spread your wings a little and live.

Game Day in a College Town... From a Student's Perspective

As of right now, the Auburn Tigers (2010 BCS National Champions... just saying...) kick off against the Utah State Aggies for the first game of the season in 1 day, 20 hours, and 23 minutes.

But who's counting, right??

I truly believe there is no other experience like a Game Day on the Plains. The RVs begin rolling in early Thursday morning prior to a game weekend. Tents are being put up on the Student Center Green Space by Thursday at noon. Friday morning feels more like Christmas Eve... and by Friday afternoon at 3 pm, students and fans are scouting out tailgating spots with tent stakes and rope. Some will begin tailgating Friday evening with cookouts and throwing a football back and forth. And out of sheer excitement, you can't sleep that night...

And then it's Game Day.

Tailgating with friends, dressing up for games (girls in their dresses and boys in collared shirts and blazers, Aubie, the flight of the eagle, the Auburn University Marching Band, the tunnel video... what more could you ask for in a Game Day Experience?!

I get chills just thinking about it.

Game Day at Auburn is more than just an experience. It's a way of life. We live and breathe football (academics are important too!)... and each Saturday kickoff is more exciting than the week before.

As a senior, I am having a major struggle accepting that this is my last football season as a student. A year from now I'll be an Alum... NOT standing in the student section on my feet for the entire game singing along with the band when they play "Living on a Prayer" and doing Bodda Getta with my fellow students. I have yet to miss a home football game (even when I had the Swine Flu my sophomore year... I was THAT girl that still went to the game, even though it was Ball State, because I was tired of sitting in my room crying over the fact that I wasn't going to be able to see the game... so I went.) as an Auburn student, and I don't plan on missing one this season.

So this football season, I plan to soak it up for all it's worth. I'll lose my voice at every game, I'll cheer Bodda Getta with all my heart, and win or lose, I'll love my Tigers no matter what, because even in defeat, I'd rather be an Auburn Tiger than anything else.

War Eagle! We kicked off the 2011-2012 school year with our annual COSAM Open House! It's always a great opportunity for students to meet the COSAM Advisors and this year's Peer Advisors as well. COSAM Annual Open House is Tomorrow!

Each year COSAM students are invited to attend the annual COSAM Open House. The 2011 Open House will occur on Wednesday, August 45 from 11AM-2PM. All COSAM students are invited to stop by the Academic Advising office, located in 239 SCC, for free food, drinks, giveaways and door prizes. There will also be a special appearance by Aubie, and live animals! Camp War Eagle has been going on now for two months, and with nine camps down and one to go, one could say that this summer has definitely FLOWN by! Camp War Eagle is the orientation program for all incoming freshman at Auburn University. Each summer the 3 academic advisors along with the help of COSAM students welcome the incoming freshman to COSAM. One of the main roles that the advisors play in orientation is helping the incoming freshman register for their fall schedules. This past week our office has been involved in the selection process of COSAM Leaders. COSAM Leaders are a group of 16 COSAM juniors and seniors that serve as the official student representatives of the College of Sciences and Mathematics. As official hosts and hostesses of the college, COSAM Leaders provide services to the college and promote pride in COSAM and all of its functions. Also, COSAM Leaders have numerous formal and informal opportunities to interact with each other and with the COSAM faculty and staff. Activities include such things as hosting former astronauts, presenting awards at Science Olympiads, interacting with board members, recruiting prospective students, meeting potential donors, participating in our golf tournament, and engaging and enjoying our alumni.

New Peer Mentor Program for Women

Female undergraduate students from all majors at Auburn University are welcomed to apply to participate in the AU-Young Women Leaders Program (YWLP) as mentors. This program is a collaborative effort between the AU-Women's Resource Center, a division of the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs, and The Department of Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS).

Participation in this program as a mentor or Big Sister is a two semester commitment. In the fall 2011 semester, students will take a HDFS 4950 course for 3 credit hour, with a class meeting on Mondays from 1-3 (tentative time), and a lab meeting on Mondays from 3:30--5:30 (tentative time); and in the spring of 2012, mentors will take HDFS 3930 Service Learning for 2 credit hours. Each of these courses is offered under Dr. Donna Sollie.

This program is a part of an after-school, curriculum-based mentoring program, that pairs junior high girls with college women, and focuses on issues facing adolescent girls. The course incorporates research with practice, and combines one-on-one mentoring with targeted group activities, addressing adolescent girls' sense of self, scholastic achievement, body image, social aggression, and healthy decision-making.

Again, female undergraduate students from any major are eligible to apply for the course; They must be willing to commit to being in the course for both fall and spring semesters and must also possess a cumulative g.p.a of 2.8 or higher. They would need to complete an application form, accompanied by two completed recommendation letters, and return all completed materials in to the AU-WRC no later than February 18th, 2011. BCS National Championship Game!

As you probably know by now Auburn's football team has made it to the National Championship game, which is set to play on Monday January 10. Another significant event also occurs this day....the first day of the Spring 2011 semester! It is important to read the email that was sent to all students from the VP of Student Affairs, Dr. Ainsley Carey, which outlines the procedure for students who will be missing class that day to attend the game in Arizona. All students wishing to miss classes on January 10 or 11 MUST notify their instructors in writing (email is acceptable) by no LATER than Sunday January 9, 2011. If you should have specific questions, please contact the Dean's office of your school or college.

If you will be one of the students who will not be making the long voyage to Arizona to watch the game, that is OK! Auburn will be hosting a viewing party at Auburn Arena on Monday Jan 10, the doors will open at 6PM. The game will be shown in its entirety on the video boards and all TVs inside the arena. Admission to the arena is free, and seating will be available on a first come, first serve basis. Additionally the game will be shown in the Student Center ballroom and on each of the TVs inside the Student Center.

So come on out and support the Auburn Tigers as they take on the Oregon Ducks for the National Championship title...WAR EAGLE!

17th Annual COSAM Toys for Tots

For the last 17 years, the College of Sciences and Mathematics have collected toys to donate for the USMC Toys for Tots. Last year we collected 318 Toys, this year our goal is to collect 600 toys to donate. Join in the fun and go shopping and drop your gift off in 239 SCC. Remember DO NOT WRAP the gifts, and gifts are for Birth-14 years for boys and girls! Candlelight vigil to honor Dean Marie Wooten

A candlelight vigil will be held in remembrance of Marie Wooten, dean of the College of Sciences and Mathematics, who died tragically Nov. 5. The vigil will take place Sunday, Nov. 14, at 5 p.m. on Saunders Lawn behind Parker Hall, adjacent to the Sciences Center Classrooms building. Members of the Auburn University and surrounding community are invited to gather to light candles and informally share memories of Dean Wooten to honor her legacy as a caring mentor and friend who touched many lives. Candles will be provided by the Women in Science and Engineering, or WISE, Institute in the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs. Funeral Arrangements and Memorial Information

MARIE WRIGHT WOOTEN of Auburn, was born Aug. 13, 1957, in Paris Tenn., and passed away tragically Nov. 5, 2010. She was dean and professor of the College of Sciences and Mathematics (COSAM) at Auburn University. Marie is preceded in death by her parents, James Roy Wright and Lucrecia Reyes Wright. She is survived by her husband, Michael C. Wooten, and cousin Joe Reyes, who represents the family. Michael was Marie’s devoted husband of 31 years and her soul mate for 34 years.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, Nov. 11, 2010, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Jeffcoat-Trant Funeral Home; 1500 Frederick Road; Opelika, Ala. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, Nov. 12, 2010, at 1:30 p.m. in the sanctuary of Auburn United Methodist Church, 220 East Magnolia Ave., Auburn, with Rev. Nick Holler officiating. A private service will follow.

Marie grew up in the “Land Between the Lakes“in northwestern Tennessee where she developed a strong interest in nature and science. Her childhood heroines were Eleanor Roosevelt, Madame Curie and Amelia Earhart, which formed the basis for her later passion in advancing opportunities for women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Marie was educated in Memphis and Denton, Texas, where she received a B.S. in Microbiology at the University of Memphis in 1979 and a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology at Texas Woman ’s University in 1983. Marie honed her research skills as a post-doctoral associate at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York, prior to her becoming a COSAM faculty member in Biological Sciences at Auburn in 1987. She served as acting head of the Department of Zoology and Wildlife from 1995-1997, and later became associate dean of Research in COSAM in 2000, a position she held until becoming dean of COSAM in 2010. Despite her strong commitment to administration at Auburn, Marie was an outstanding leader, role model, and mentor in research, teaching and service. In particular, Marie lived for her research and for her students. She embodied the ideal that to be successful students “should be life-long learners and individuals who make a difference.” Among her many hobbies, Marie was an avid runner, being particularly proud at completing the “Sprint Triathlon“ where she finished first in her age group.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions may be made to “Marie W. Wooten Memorial Scholarship Fund.” Checks should be made payable to the “AU Foundation“ and mailed to the College of Sciences and Mathematics; 315 Roosevelt Concourse; Auburn University; Auburn, Ala.; 36849-7350.

First Day of School Reminders!

It is that time again...the first day of Fall classes. I do not know about you, but I CAN NOT believe it Where on earth did the summer go! For all of our new COSAM students who will beginning Auburn this Fall we welcome you to COSAM and Auburn University. Below are a few reminders for you as you begin your college career with us!

1. Find your classes prior to the first day of school. Make sure you know where all your buildings are and DO NOT be embarrassed to keep a campus map with you!

2. Purchase your C-Zone parking pass if you plan on having a car on campus. There is limited parking available to students, so I would recommend that you take the Tiger Transit if you live off campus.

3. Make sure you fill out and return your medical forms to the Auburn University Medical Clinic as soon as possible.

4. Download the COSAM advising podcasts:.

b. Click COSAM then COSAM Advisors.

5. Join the COSAM Facebook group to stay up to date on current events within our college.

6. Plan on attending our COSAM Open House on Wednesday, August 25^th, in 239 Sciences Center Classrooms between the times of 11am-2pm.

During the summer months our office is quite busy getting ready for our incoming freshman students. One of the main programs that we take part in is Camp War Eagle. Our office advises students during the registration period at Camp each session. There are eight Camp sessions total in the entire summer. This year, COSAM's estimated enrollment for the Fall is 900 students! More students than we have ever had before in our freshman class. So we have been SUPER busy at Camp War Eagle! Congratulations to all the COSAM graduates! This semester COSAM graduated approximately 215 students, which a large class!

Each semester, COSAM provides a reception/picnic to honor all the graduates and their families. The spring graduation, since it is usually our largest, always takes the form of a graduation picnic at the COSAM Arboretum. This year we had close to 400 attendees of the picnic,and the barbecue and chicken fingers were a huge success! Here are a few pictures from the 2010 COSAM Graduation Picnic!

Graduation Farewell and Words of Wisdom from a COSAM Student

It’s a week before graduation and seniors are getting everything in order for that quick walk across stage with our peers. After finals, we often reflect on our time here at Auburn. A familiar song says “If I could do it again you know I'd do it the same”. I have thoroughly enjoyed my four years here at Auburn—I have learned a lot, made lifelong friends, accomplished goals, and assimilated into the Auburn family and its traditions. I absolutely love Auburn and everything it has to offer. In hindsight though, I must admit I wouldn’t do it the same. I’d do it better!

I offer to you now my DO’s and DON’T’s as you continue the journey as an undergrad in the College of Sciences & Mathematics.

DO go to class. It makes a world of difference come test day. You would be surprised how many faculty recognize a student’s face in a 250+ class. If you rush into office hours the day before a test; they’ll certainly know if you have been there or not. Treat every class like there’s an attendance policy!

DO make friends in your major. It is the best way to form close-knit relationships with your peers. Y’all can study together, unwind together, and possibly work together eventually.

DON’T use ratemyprofessor.com. Gathering opinions from a variety of upperclassmen in person gives you a true sense of the coursework and professor.

DO set goals. Follow them fearlessly!

DO take a random class outside of your major. A break from the sciences will be highly enjoyable! Whether it’s bowling, vegetable production, or elementary Japanese, it will be beneficial.

DON’T take a mini-vacation once you get into professional school. While it’s an achievement, nonetheless you’re still a student. Come final time, those two weeks off from school will bite you!

DO enjoy downtown. Good food, good lemonade, good times!

DO utilize your advisors! They are highly knowledgeable and equipped to handle any situation. They’re truly amazing and considered the best on-campus!

DON’T let it fly by. Four years will pass quickly. Live it up & do extraordinary things.

DO immerse yourself in the traditions, academics, sports, organizations, and everything else Auburn has to offer.

Dr. Marie Wooten, current COSAM associate dean for research and faculty member in the Department of Biological Sciences has been named dean of the college, effective Aug. 1.. Dr. Wooten will replace Dean Scheneller who will be retiring later this summer.

Alternative Health Careers Seminar

Alpha Epsilon Delta (AED), the Pre-Health Student Organization will be presenting an Alternative Health Careers Seminar on TUESDAY MARCH 23, 2010. There will be a browse session from 5:45-6:15 PM in the SCA Foyer followed by a panel discussion from 6:30-7:15PM in SCA 101.

Applications to be a COSAM Peer Instructor are currently available! Rising Juniors and Seniors in COSAM with at least a 3.0 GPA are encouraged to apply. Peer Instructors assist with advising and instruction in COSAM, while developing close relationships with fellow students and the COSAM staff. Plus, the position pays $6.70 an hour, with variable hours. Applications are available in 239 SCC, are due Monday, February 15th, 2010 by 4:45 PM. Career Leadership Seminar

Finding the Leader Withinis an opportunity for juniors, seniors and graduate level students to increase self awareness, enhance leadership skills and prepare for the career development process.

Participants will learn how to evaluate, market and communicate their leadership skills to potential employers while facilitating a better understanding of themselves.

The seminars will be held in the Student Center on Tuesdays from 10:30 am-12 pm (March 2, 9, 23, 30, April 6 and 13).Lunch will be provided as students engage in exploration, listen to innovative speakers and collaborate together.

COSAM Peer Instructors

DO YOU WANT TO BE A COSAM PEER INSTRUCTOR????

COSAM Peer Instructors are Juniors and Seniors that enjoy helping their fellow COSAM peers. As a Peer Instructor, one would assist with Mandatory Advising, help teach the Pre Health Orientation course (that is taught to Freshman), and one would serve as an example and mentor for fellow students. This is a paid position, and requires variable hours per week. If you are intersted, please come by and pick up an application beginning this Wednesday February 3 in 239 SCC. Rising Juniors and Seniors in COSAM with at least a 3.0 GPA are encouraged to apply. All applications are due Monday February 15th by 4:45 PM. Call backs for interviews will be posted by 4:45 PM on Wednesday February 17th, and all interviews will take place on Monday and Tuesday February 22 and 23. Peer instructor sign-ups are just around the corner! This is a great opportunity for students not only to give back to COSAM but make some extra money. A peer instructor plays an active role in helping fellow students with making their schedules, as well as provide an insight on how to approach a particular course. While academic advisors are the backbone for our college, by guiding COSAM students in the right direction academically, peer instructors are able to provide their fellow students with a different angle based off of personal experience. On top of it all, you get to hang with some of COSAM's finest! If this sounds like something that interests you, PLEASE come and turn in your application. This definitely would be a great experience for anyone!

New Year, New Semester

Well, the Spring 2010 semester has been off and running for almost 3 weeks now. Which is really hard to believe, it seems like only yesterday that the university was closed for 2 weeks for Winter Break!

By this time in the semester you probably have not had your first test yet, but you may have had a quiz or two. And you may be starting to sweat because you are not understanding some of the inforamtion that is being presented to you in class. Well, something that may not be aware of is that Auburn University has an amazing set of tutoring and academic services to help students who are struggling.

The key to being successful in college is not being afraid to ask for help, and by visiting the Academic Support website, you will be linked to many of the tutoring services that are available on campus. In addition to Academic Support, several of the deparments in COSAM, also offer tutoring. If you wish to get a copy of these, you will need to stop by 239 SCC, we have copies of all the departmental tutoring information located at the front desk.

It is that time again, the end of the semester...... time for studying endlessly and getting ready for the winter break. Just a few things to think about......

1. Studying-Do not wait until the last minute to beginning studying! There are resources on campus if you need help. Student Academic Support is located in the bottom floor of the library, and can be reached at 844-5972.

2.. Grade Adjustment Policy (GAP)- If you are going to be suspended, or if you want to GAP a class...you CAN NOT do this until the grade has officially posted to your record. To GAP a class you need to simply come by our office, in 239 SCC, and fill out the form. GAPping a course, will remove the calculation of that particular grade from your Auburn GPA, but the course will still be visible on your transcript. If you have questions, contact your academic advisor at 844-4269.

3. Registration- If you still have not come to get unblocked for the Spring 2010 semester...you need to do so ASAP. The longer you wait to get unblocked, the more likely chance that you are not going to be able to register for classes you need for the Spring. If you have questions please contact your advisor at 844-4269.

Toys for Tots

For the last 16 years, the College of Sciences and Math have been a avid supporter of the Toys for Tots program. The goals is to make the holidays a special time for the children in the Auburn community. Last year COSAM collected 430 toys, and the 2009 goal is 600 gifts! Please bring an unwrapped gift to 239 Science Center Classroom Building to help us reach our goal. The deadline to bring a toy is December 11, 2009. COSAM Leaders 10 Year Reunion and Presentation of Dr.Lawrence Wit Endowed Professorship

On Saturday, Nov 8th, 2009, COSAM hosted the 10 year reunion for all of the past COSAM leaders. This event was held in the Science Center Auditorium, with a COSAM Tailgate following for the Auburn Homecoming game.

The event was a well attended with approximately 75 past and present COSAM leaders on campus. Each of the past COSAM Leaders presidents spoke for a few minutes describing some of their best memories of their times here at Auburn. This was then followed by a video with some HILARIOUS pictures of all the good times that the leaders have had in the past 10 years. The reunion closed with a video montage and speech by Dean Schneller, who presented Dr. Larry Wit with the Dr. Lawrence Wit Endowed Professorship. Which was quite a surprise to Dr. Wit who had NO idea that this was coming. The video brought many to tears and when the lights came up in the auditorium, Dr. Wit was greeted by his family and friends who had come to this event to see him get recognized for this great honor.

It was quite a spectacular day, one I am quite sure that Dr. Wit and the leaders will never forget!

COSAM Leaders are heading to Flag Football Championship!

The COSAM Leaders have finally done it! For the first time in COSAM Leader history, they have finally made the play-offs in intramural flag-football. This may not seem to be that big of a deal, but believe me, it is!! Going against all the odds, the leaders defeated their last opponent while playing two men short. The opponent seemed to somewhat take the leaders for a ‘joke" at first, but they were quickly proven wrong when on the opening play the leaders gained a 15 yard completion. Using 90% of their brains and about only 10% of their muscles, the leaders strategically mapped out each and every one of the moves, planning only for the next. The league is specifically co-ed, meaning that each team relies heavily on both their men and woman to work together in order for each play to be executed accordingly. The ladies on the leader’s team truly stepped up and took the game into their hands as they accounted for over 50% of their total yards gained! With a final score 7 -6, giving the win to the leaders, they continue their pursuit to winning their first Beginner League Championship. "WE ARE…COSAM!!!"

GET ON TRACK SEMINAR FOR PRE HEALTH STUDENTS

On Monday November 16, 2009, Mrs. Krysta Diehl and Mrs. Beverley Childress, COSAM's Pre Health Director will be holding the 2nd Annual GET ON TRACK SEMINAR for all PRE HEALTH Students. This seminar aims to help pre-professional students stay on the right track and to be competitive applicants for medical, dental, optometry, pharmacy, physical therapy and physician assistant professional programs.

Prior to the seminar there will be FREE pizza in the Chemistry Building Lobby at 5:15 and a browse session from 5:30-6:15 in the SCA Lobby. The browse session will give students a chance to explore other options such as : forensic science, occupational therapy, health care administration, chiropractic medicine, sports medicine and genetic counseling.

During the seminar, Mrs. Diehl will be discussing the criteria for admissions committees (grades, professional experiences/job shadowing). Additionally, she will have sample applications of students who have applied and been accepted to professional school for students to be able to see examples of what will get you admitted.

Mrs. Childress will explain the new guidelines for the Pre Professional Applications Committee (PPAC), which will go into effect January 2010. This information will be VERY IMPORTANT for students who will be applying to medical, dental and optometry schools.

War Eagle Days Fall 2009

Throughout the year Auburn hosts many different kinds of events where prospective Auburn students have the opportunity to come and visit the college first hand and see what all the University has to offer. War Eagle Days is one of the major events the College of Sciences & Mathematics participates in order to inform those students on the variety of majors with in the college, as well as answer any general question the students or parents may have. At each War Eagle Day, not only are some of COSAM’s advisors present, but the student ambassadors (COSAM Leaders) are there to interact with the students and basically provide them with information of their own experiences going through COSAM. As a COSAM Leader, I think it is very important that students get the opportunity not only to meet the advisors on a more personal basis, but also meet students like themselves, that have already witnessed and experienced what it is like to be a COSAM student.

At the COSAM booth, information regarding scholarships within the College, curriculum models for each major, as well as general information about COSAM can all be found. All and all, War Eagle Days are not just about overloading students with information and talking about how wonderful Auburn is, but rather allows these students to get a glimpse of what it is like to be apart of the Auburn family and see first hand how GREAT Auburn truly is!

A Day in the Life of the COSAM Student Council President

7:15 A.M. – I just woke up to embark on the day before me. As a senior, I can say I have yet to have a semester without 8 AM’s. Gotta love that!

7:35 A.M. – I catch the Tiger Transit to make my way to campus. One of the best services offered on-campus; I ride it religiously!

8:00 A.M. – Sitting in FLLN 1010 – Elementary Latin I. I quickly come to realize why the language is dead. “There is no word order in Latin; put them however you like”. Really?! 9:00 A.M. – Dr. Steven Knowlton ceases to amaze me in PHYS 1510 – Physics II. While discussing the properties of light in lecture, he demonstrates it with an exciting display of laser beams and mirrors. It’s always fun to remember why you fall in love with science to begin with—it’s what’s fascinating!

10:00 A.M. – I do my office hour in COSAM. As Pre-Pharmacy Club president, I utilize this time to organize meetings, talk to my officers, update the members, and answer the bulk of my e-mail! It’s surprisingly a nice break from my daily academic routine. I must admit student organizations in general are a nice break from academics.

11:00 A.M. – Fifty minutes with Dr. Holly Ellis will fly by in BCHE 5190 – Biochemistry II. She is quite a pro. She is highly knowledgeable of the subject matter and eager to answer our questions. As a student, it’s nice to know our professor genuinely cares about her subject as well as her classroom. She makes class entertaining with humor, songs, and other mnemonics useful in studying.

12:00 P.M. – I have to run home to eat lunch! My afternoon awaits me!

12:30 P.M. – I meet with Dr. Wit, COSAM Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, and Ms. Krysta Diehl, COSAM Academic Advisor & Student Council Advisor, to discuss our plans for COSAM Student Council. Dr. Wit is full of wisdom and definitely expedites the meeting by offering good advice for myself as president. Ms. Diehl is always helpful in making me stay on-track not only as President but as a student as well. Advisors are definitely good to utilize—especially in COSAM!

1:00 PM – Working at COSAM! I’m the smiling face that greets you when you walk in!

5:00 PM – After work, I run to a meeting in Funchess. I serve as the President for Beta Beta Beta Biological Sciences Honor Society and have lots to discuss with our officers. We are planning a Bat Walk the week of Halloween. It’s always a fun excursion for the community; many students participate, too. Getting involved in COSAM has definitely let me make countless friends with common goals and interests!

5:30 P.M. I can finally sit down and eat dinner with my fraternity brothers. It’s time to take a load off from the daily grind and spend time with my friends. It’s nice to unwind after the eventful day.

6:00 P.M. – Gotta keep the tradition alive—guessing Georgia Lottery numbers before watching Jeopardy. I’m not good at guessing the numbers but dominate in Jeopardy. Always make it a “TRUE Daily Double”.

6:30 PM – I filter through my e-mail once more; update my planner; call some people in regards to COSAM, classes, SGA, other organizations, etc.

7:00 PM – I have a date with Mr. Ralph Broun Draughon! I head to the library to study. I crack open my books and delve deep into glycolysis, Latin verb conjugations, light & optics, and Organic Chemistry Lab procedures.

10:00 PM – Get one last fix of caffeine or sugar. Auburn offers a lot of places to stop. Auburn definitely has its fill of places for its various night owls. From the 24 hour Starbucks, Sonic, TCBY, it’s always good to reenergize after a long day.

11:30 PM – I finally can crawl into bed to start the process all over. What a day in COSAM!

15th Annual COSAM Golf Tournament

The 15th Annual College of Sciences and Mathematics Dean’s Scholarship Golf tournament successfully finished up this past Friday, September 25! It was a gorgeous day, but despite the heat, many of the golfers were still able to bring their “A-game”. With great food and great people, the event was sure to be a success. Aubie was also present at the event, but it took all he could to keep himself out of trouble. Without the generosity of COSAM scholarship donors, we would not be able to have this event, or the scholarships for COSAM students. The receipents of the COSAM Golf Tournament this year were: Megan Benak, Meredith Schneider, Christen Thigpen, and Ben Samuelson.

Not only were the golfers under the pressure of the tournament itself, but they also had to prove themselves on the greens by participating in our putting contest. The winning putt made is a near 4.5 inches from the hole!

As the tournament finished up, many were able to claim their winnings from the silent auction as well as say their goodbyes to their competition. Speaking for all of COSAM, we sincerely wanted to thank all those whom participated in the donations as well as the set-up and organizing of the event so that it was the most successful golf tournament yet!

Its Mandatory Advising Time!

Ahhh yes, it is that time of the semester again when all the students are rushing around trying to figure out what they are going to take next semester! Well, I am here to give you some helpful information about COSAM's Mandatory Advising process.

To begin, COSAM has a wonderful Mandatory Advising Guide that is available at: http://www.auburn.edu/academic/science_math/cosam/students/registration/unblocking/index.htm .
This guide, can help to answer all the questions that you may have about the registation process.

Mandatory Advising will begin October 5th- October 30th. The schedule for advising is available on our website, http://www.auburn.edu/academic/science_math/cosam/students/registration/advising.html , Or, you can stop by our office in 239 SCC to pick up a paper copy.

During Mandatory Advising, the advisors DO NOT schedule appointments, you MUST come in during one of the times that is listed on the schedule. You will need to bring your COMPLETED registration worksheet with you when you come to visit the advisors.

Something new that we are doing this year is called Express Lane advising. If you have NO questions and know exactly what you want to take next semester, you can visit our Express Lane Advisor during October 5th - 30th, on Monday-Thursday afternoons, 2-3:30. This will hopefully help with the long lines that are often times present during the afternoons.

Successful Study Habits from a COSAM Student's Perspective!

One of the biggest and most difficult transitions that happens as you move from a high school student to a college student is your study habits. I’m sure many of you remember being drilled at Camp War Eagle about how you’re study habits at college will directly affect the amount of success you have in your classes. For those of you older students, I’m sure you will agree, and for those of you younger students, you will learn quickly! There are a few simple things that I try to do in terms of study habits that have proven to help me to be successful in my classes here at Auburn, and I thought I would pass them along to you in hopes that it might help you succeed as well. Here they are:

GO TO CLASS! – It amazes me how many people don’t attend class and expect to do well in the class. There is a direct correlation in going to class regularly and succeeding. You get a feel for the professor and understand how he or she might ask questions on the exams, quizzes, etc. It is also crucial for keeping up with the material. I would rather go to class for 3 hours a week and listen to an expert teach me than try to spend 5 frustrating hours in the library trying to teach myself.

KEEP UP WITH OUTSIDE READING/HOMEWORK. This will help you understand what is going on in class day to day and not get behind. Often times a professor will lecture on a subject having expected you to read about it before hand. The professor is there to teach you not hand feed you the material.

STAY ORGANIZED. It’s important to be able to access notes, handouts, etc. for a class to do well in it. I have found that organized notes really help when it comes time to study. I don’t have to spend hours trying to gather my materials everywhere. I know right where it is and I can spend my time studying the notes instead of looking everywhere for them,

STUDY MORE THAN ONE NIGHT BEFORE A TEST. While you might have been able to do this in high school and succeed, in all likelihood, you will not have the same success at Auburn. In most cases, there is too much material to really study and comprehend in just one night of cramming. Also, while you might remember material you cram for the test the next day, chances are you will not retain this information over a longer period of time (i.e. final exam). Try to spread your studying out over a few days before a test. It will lower your stress level and it will pay off with your grades in the end.

STUDY IN GROUPS. While I am not a big fan of group studying, there are definitely some good things about it. Often times someone in the group might understand something better than you and help teach you about it. It is also good to get other perspectives on the material so you cover all angles (even the ones you might not have thought about). Just be careful that you don’t turn a study group into social hour at the library. Actual studying involves more than walking through the library doors. Contrary to popular belief, being in that building doesn’t just beam the information to your brain.

I’m sure most of you have heard these habits before and you might even have some things that work for you that I didn’t include, and that’s awesome. I just thought I’d pass some of my habits along. The most important thing is that you put out good effort towards doing well in a class, and there are many ways to do that. Good luck in all your studying! See you around the COSAM office soon.

Football Season Begins Again!

While many of us spend much of our free time outside of class either studying or trying to catch up on sleep before the next big exam, it can sometimes be rather difficult to find any free time to just catch up with old friends. Fortunately, many of our COSAM students found their way to Jordan Hare Stadium this last weekend. Being led by a new head coach and new starting quarterback, Auburn may have been slightly doubted in their abilities pull off a victory at the season opener. Auburn won the first game of the season with a final score of 37- 13; and an established a new school record for the longest play in Auburn history. After the game COSAM students as well as many excited fans made their way to Toomer’s Corner to finish off the night with one of Auburn’s oldest traditions.
With the next game in just a few days, many Auburn fans are loading up their cars, packing up their campers, and even setting aside their favorite Biology book to make sure they are in attendance to witness Auburn go head-to-head with Mississippi St. All and all, it is possible for Auburn’s finest to find time to set down the textbooks and put chemistry on hold and enjoy some good old Auburn football!! War Eagle!

OPEN HOUSE!

Last Wednesday, August 26, 2009, COSAM had another successful Open House! It gave many of the students, both new and old, a chance to stop by COSAM and casually visit with their advisors, while enjoying refreshments provided by the college. Though the Open House was not held in its usual location at the quad just outside of the Science Center Classroom Building, this did not stop many from taking the time to come up and pay COSAM a visit. Amongst the advisors, many tables were set up for COSAM affiliated organizations such as AED, Pre-pharmacy club, as well as many others to share their information with the new freshman class. COSAM’s open house not only provided students with the opportunity to become aware of what all the college has to offer but to reveal how friendly and personal the staff of COSAM strives to be with its students. On top of getting to know the staff of COSAM, students had the opportunity to either make new friends while simply hanging out, or catch up with old ones. The colleges peer instructors were also present at the event, to also share useful information with students regarding anything from study tips to how to meet people in classes. While Bruster’s was not able to join us for the party, many people walked home with some pretty “Cool” door prizes! Here are some pictures from the event:

Freshman Flashback

I remember my first day here at Auburn. The first class I walked into had 210 people who all seemed to know each other, and, needless to say, I felt a little bit overwhelmed and alone. I went to a pretty small all boys prep school and had never been in a classroom with more than 20 people, so this jump to over 200 classmates was quite a different experience. I remember listening to the professor list different aspects of the syllabus and the expectations he had for success in the class. It went something like this: “If you ever miss class, you will fail. If you ever miss a reading or can’t understand the homework, you will fail. If you don’t study outside of class for 8-10 hours a week, you will fail.” Blah, blah, blah, you get the picture. Kind of an intimidating first class to say the least. In the end, I did very well in the class and I understood why the professor expressed such high expectations on the first day. He probably didn’t expect anyone to meet all of his expectations but it was the best way for him to express the seriousness and difficulty of college courses and the importance of putting significant effort into studying and preparing ahead of time.

I tell this story to offer some encouragement to those of you who might be new to this whole college thing and overwhelmed after the first week of class. You are in a very important transition time from high school to college level expectations, and it is very, very important to take your academic life seriously, but at the same time, don’t think your life is over after your first week. Week after week, class will get easier and you will begin to get in a rhythm of how much and when you need to study. Just like anything else in life, you will get more comfortable with college the more you are around it. As much as it might seem that you won’t have time for anything else these next four years other than studying, you in fact will have lots of free time. Get involved in something! Your best memories of Auburn will be the people you became friends with. We have some great ways to get involved with COSAM but there are many other organization and ways to get to know people all around Auburn. Just find something you love and get involved. Also, please come by our COSAM Open House this Wednesday from 11 – 2 in the COSAM Office. It’s a great way to meet your advisors and find out some cool stuff about COSAM and some of the awesome resources we offer.

Well, another summer of Camp War Eagle is over...but we had a great time getting to know our incoming COSAM students.

This year we had an AMAZING staff of students to help us with the orientation process. We would like to send a special thanks to all of our COSAM student helpers, and also to our Camp War Eagle Counselors. You all were AWESOME and we are certainly going to miss seeing all of your faces!

You know that it is officially summer on the Plains when you see the masses of incoming freshman on campus for Camp War Eagle. This year we began our first Camp on May 20. It was a huge success. Camp is such a great time for our students but also for us advisors. We love getting to know our new incoming students, and helping them to plan their first semester here at Auburn. We are currently through Camp 3 and have 5 more Camps to go! Here are a few pictures from our first Camp.

Who’s Who is a prestigious, national honor that is given to junior, senior and graduate students who are outstanding campus student leaders. The Final Lecture

Dr. Lawrence Wit, the College of Sciences and Mathematics Associate Dean for Academics, was recently recognized as the recipient of the Final Lecture. The event took place on April 9th, 2009. The Final Lecture was an opportunity for the Class of 2009 to recognize the professor they felt is the most outstanding teacher at Auburn University. Student leaders narrowed down a wide pool of nominees to five outstanding professors. From the narrowed pool of candidates thousands of juniors and seniors across campus voted Dr. Wit to present the 2nd Annual Final Lecture. Dr. Wit delivered a commencement-style address open to all students, faculty, and administrators that included words of advice and inspiration for students who just began their college career as well as those who are preparing to graduate from Auburn.

I personally was honored to be able to introduce Dr. Wit as the Director of the Final Lecture this year. Getting to know him over the past few years, Dr. Wit has certainly impacted me academically and personally. It was great to see how much it meant to him, and even better to hear his words of wisdom. One of the most profound things that resonated with me was how he spoke of faith in and appreciation of the ordinary. Luckily, the lecture was recorded and will be preserved.

It's Mandatory Registration Time!

It is that time of the semester again, mandatory registration! Which for COSAM student's means that you have to either make an appointment to meet with your Faculty Advisor, or come by the COSAM Dean's Office Academic Advising to meet with your advisor.
Just a few reminders for all COSAM students:
- If you are a declared major, meaning that you have officially declared your major in COSAM. You MUST go to a faculty advisor for advising.
-If you have a 2.0 GPA and you are undeclared/prehealth, we have Group Advising times set aside. Group Advising is great because it takes at the most 15 minutes. So you can avoid standing in those long lines.

-Also, if you are on Facebook, please sign up for our Facebook Group...it is a great way to get reminders and up to date information on what is going on in COSAM.

Summer School: Should I or Shouldn't I Take Courses???

With my experiences in Camp War Eagle and the College of Science & Mathematics, a great question I’m asked is “Should I take summer classes?” My absolute answer is “Yes!”. Summer school is an option many students take advantage of here at Auburn (and especially COSAM!) My best piece of advice is you should definitely experience at least one summer here at Auburn University. Whether you participate in the 5 or 10 week curriculum, it still adds an exciting experience to your college career. Summers at Auburn offer smaller classes, research opportunities, a change of social scenery, and great weather!
A freshman’s general concern is should they stay for the summer. I think it is a great way to branch out in Auburn and your curriculum by being here your first summer. Though I still want to stress you have at least two other summers, too! I personally went home and took advantage of knocking out a core class at a local community college after my freshmen year—while keeping my summer job from high school! Community college is a great way to complete a social science, English, communication, or history class. Freshmen year is typically full of homesickness and taking summer school back home is a great way to relive your last summer with high school friends as well as obtain college credits.
***Remember you have to fill out a transient form to enroll at a school elsewhere for the summer.***
Understand school can get stressful—especially with a shortened semester. During my summer at AU, I took two sciences (with corresponding labs) and still had free time on top of my studies to soak up the sun and relax. Like any semester, do not overload yourself. Summer school is a time to catch-up or move ahead while relaxing between two full terms.
I recommend summer school at least once. It’s highly advantageous at making your fall and spring less crowded or stressful. You will make new friends and acquaint yourself with faculty and staff. Summers in Auburn are AUsome.
